I want to be more open, and my passion is helping startups grow, so I wondered if candor really drives business value. The research says yes, in certain circumstances.
𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘺 𝘪𝘴 𝘌𝘢𝘴𝘪𝘦𝘳 – Concocting and recalling lies takes energy, so candid communication saves time for growth.
𝘗𝘦𝘢𝘬 𝘗𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 – To support your goals, stakeholders need to plainly understand your vision.* Immediately clarifying our plan allows others to focus on the issue.
𝘌𝘯𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘴 𝘍𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘬 – Attaining peak performance requires timely and valid feedback. As a role model**, your sincere desire to improve results by learning fosters similar behavior.
𝘐𝘮𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘥 𝘙𝘦𝘴𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘴 – Owning accountability on results will encourage others to hold themselves equally responsible.
𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘭𝘪𝘱 𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦 – Avoid applying honesty to be hurtful under the guise of candor. Constructive feedback is intended to support others and strengthen collaboration.
Candor admits human fallibility and I know we feel pressure to be flawless. Also, self-awareness is needed for candor.
Hopefully, the benefits of candor (both for you and for the business) make this skill desirable.
