Sometimes, what we call “progress” starts as something we fear could end us.
On a gray August morning in 1945, a young Japanese doctor stepped out of the ruins of a Hiroshima hospital, bandages wrapped around his arms and his eyes sunken. He had spent the night stitching skin that would not hold, watching patients die from forces no textbook had prepared him for.
In the weeks that followed, rumors spread faster than radiation: invisible rays that could rot your bones, poisoned rain that would make children glow in the dark. The doctor kept a notebook in his pocket, quietly recording symptoms, deaths, and strange patterns in how people fell ill.
Years later, invited to an international conference, he walked into a room of engineers and physicists who spoke of the atom as a future power source, not the curse he had seen it to be. It was clean, compact, and able to light entire cities. Listening, he realized that the same force that had turned his city into a cautionary tale was being calmly weighed as everyday infrastructure.
The first great panic
Half a century ago, nuclear power sat at the center of a split-screen future. On one side were mushroom clouds and the end of civilization. On the other hand, gleaming plants were promising almost limitless, low-carbon energy.
The same reactors that carried the possibility of meltdowns, fallout, and uninhabitable exclusion zones were also hailed by some scientists as the only realistic way to power a growing, electrified world without choking it in smoke. People learned to live with a strange double vision: nuclear as both countdown clock and lifeline, a technology that could either push humanity over the edge or pull it back from it.
No one argued about physics. It was about whether we trusted ourselves to hold that much power without losing control.
Then the disasters came. Three Mile Island in 1979, Chernobyl in 1986, and Fukushima in 2011 each turned abstract risk into searing images that lodged in the global imagination: control rooms in crisis, helicopters dumping sand and concrete, abandoned towns with playgrounds slowly being eaten by weeds.
What had felt like a speculative fear became proof that the worst case could happen. Politicians canceled projects. Investors backed away. Whole countries froze or reversed their nuclear plans. The story of nuclear shifted from promise with risk to risk with a bit of leftover promise.
Those meltdowns reached decades into the future and slowed the development of a technology that might have played a larger role in addressing climate change.
The existence of nuclear power wasn't the problem. But history showed us that underinvestment, failure to prioritize safety, and lack of governance, all in the name of speed and short-term progress, can let a single incident rewrite the trajectory of an entire scientific field.
We paid a price both for the accidents themselves and for the progress that never materialized when trust collapsed.
The emotional replay with AI
We are now replaying that same emotional script with AI.
Depending on who you listen to, AI is either the tool that will hollow out democracy, erase millions of jobs, and slip beyond human control, or the breakthrough that will cure disease, accelerate discovery, and unlock a new era of abundance.
The vocabulary changed, but the psychology didn’t. Behind every dire warning about runaway systems and every excited promise of productivity sits the same question we asked about the atom: What happens when our tools become too powerful to fully understand, yet too useful to ignore?
No one argues over the potential of nuclear or AI. The argument is over whether we are wise enough to govern it well.
The nuclear age shows us what happens when safety is treated as an afterthought. If we build and deploy AI without serious guardrails, shared standards, meaningful regulations, or a culture of responsibility, we invite our own version of a meltdown.
The smoking crater on the map of AI could look like a financial cascade triggered by automated systems, an information environment so poisoned by fake content that people no longer trust what they see, or a security failure in which powerful models cause real-world harm.
Any one of those events could do for AI what Chernobyl did for nuclear. It could freeze progress, destroy public trust, and turn a generation away from a technology that might otherwise have helped more than it hurt.
What the rest of us can do
The average person does not get to rewrite AI policy or decide how the biggest models are trained, but that does not mean we are spectators. Our choices about what we use, what we tolerate, and what we demand from leaders can push the system in a direction.
At the simplest level, that means asking better questions. When you use an AI tool, do you know where your data goes, whether it was trained on stolen work, or how it might be wrong? When you see synthetic content, do you share it unquestioningly, or do you pause and check? When your representatives talk about AI, do you reward sound bites, or do you press them on concrete safeguards, transparency, and accountability?
We cannot individually control the technology, but we can collectively raise the bar for what is acceptable. A public that is constructively curious, skeptical, and engaged pushes leaders to regulate high-risk uses and invest in safety quickly. Waiting until after a major disaster to shift sentiment is the worst option.
A note to founders
If you are building in this moment, your decisions are bigger than simply what your product does. You’re deciding what it makes easier, what it makes cheaper, and what it makes tempting for others to abuse.
That is real leverage.
Part of preparing is technical. Treat safety, testing, and red-teaming (playing the role of an attacker or hostile user) as core product work. Design for failure modes on day one, and bake in limits and monitoring from the outset.
Part of preparing is cultural. Set norms inside your company that speed and safety are not a binary choice but a necessary pairing. Reward people who raise hard questions instead of quietly stepping around them. Choose investors, partners, and customers who are aligned with the idea that long-term viability and trust are worth more than short-term growth.
We do not get to choose whether AI is powerful, any more than previous generations got to choose whether the atom could be split. But we can push governments and corporations to make decisions that build a long future.
