What would break if your startup doubled in customers, revenues, or team?
The answer might be a process that depends on one person, a metric that arrives too late to guide decisions, or a team that needs clearer authority to act. Growth can expose these gaps faster than founders can fix them.
In Exponential Organizations 2.0, Salim Ismail, Peter H. Diamandis, and Michael S. Malone explore how a clear purpose, technology, and a new approach to organizing work can help companies achieve outsized impact.
The book offers a useful prompt for founders: consider how your company needs to operate at its next stage, while you still have room to make deliberate choices.
"Purpose trumps strategy, and execution beats planning."
Here are four ideas worth considering.
1. Give people a purpose
Revenue goals matter, but a clear purpose helps people understand what they are working toward and make decisions when the founder is not in the room.
Ask whether your team can explain the change your company wants to make, as well as the numbers it hopes to reach. The book calls this a Massive Transformative Purpose.
2. Use unpaid resources
A small team does not have to own every resource it uses. Communities, on-demand talent, and leveraged assets can expand what a company can do.
The question is which work truly needs to live inside the business and which capabilities you can access when needed.
3. Build for learning
Metrics are most valuable when they help people decide what to do next. Give teams visibility into results, room to test ideas, and a way to share what they learn.
The book places dashboards, experimentation, and autonomy among the internal attributes of an exponential organization.
4. Bring in expertise
For founders, one practical application of using resources beyond the payroll is to bring in a vendor or fractional leader for a defined challenge.
They might help establish a new process, lead a cross-functional project, or fill a leadership gap while you determine what the company needs longer term.
My favorite habit is to review every major process at least once a year. You should ask:
Do our metrics still capture what matters?
Do our processes help the team move?
What assumptions have we stopped questioning?
These solutions often require some time, energy, and budget, but not a lot, allowing you to keep experimenting. Keep testing, and remember that even a strong solution now may need to evolve (again).
